As a child born under a flag of red, white and blue I have never known a time that I’ve been silenced. Pencils are available in any drugstores, school is provided and required, public library cards are free and the world is at my fingertips – through the internet, through the books I read, and through the good old gray and white newspapers scattered across my living room.
It is the freedom that American soldiers have died for, that journalists have went to court to protect their sources for, that we fight against censorship and for free access to education and knowledge for…that those killed in Paris today were murdered for – and I mourn.
“The pen is mightier than the sword,” the saying goes and it will not falter. Pencils must be given to the children, books must be printed and stocked on the shelves of the world, journalists must write and cartoonists must draw, because as Heinrich Heine once said “where they have burned books, they will end in burning human beings.”
Today, as a citizen of this world, as a writer, as a lover of liberty and the power of free expression, and as a believer in our right to truth…Je Suis Charlie.
